The Ortona Cemetery is an
early 19th century graveyard in Hendry County, Florida. It is the
final resting place for some of Florida’s early settlers and soldiers of the
Civil and Seminole Wars (3).
Although the graveyard
itself is very old, the history of the land beneath it predates the cemetery by
several thousand years. It is located within the Ortona Canal System,
Archeological Experts claim that artifacts discovered in this area date as far
back as 1700 BC. Archeological Excavation and Research into these artifacts
continue in multiple sites in the Ortona Area, including the burial mounds
adjacent to the cemetery.
In 1926 The Ortona
Cemetery was dedicated to victims of a devastating hurricane which killed
hundreds. Upon excavation of the mass grave, it was discovered that the hole
had been dug into an Ancient Indian Burial Mound. The hurricane victims were
interred and comingled in the Indian remains.
Although interments
continue today at the Ortona Cemetery, no other burials have taken place in
that section of the cemetery. An historical marker is placed at the site of the
mass grave.
The care and maintenance
is charged to the Hendry County Board of Commissioners and is fairly well
maintained, however, many of the older headstones are worn and or missing and
many of the earlier records are incomplete.
Reports of Paranormal
Activity at the Ortona Cemetery include the Shadow form of an Indian and
children crying.
Battles & Sieges
The 300 years of the colonial era
(c. 1500-1800) were ones of constant warfare. As European countries vied with each other for the economic wealth in the ?New Worlds? they increasingly came into military conflict as well. Encounters starting in Europe, Africa, Asia or the Americas quickly escalated into international global warfare. The Castillo de San Marcos, though a remote outpost, weathered many attacks during these almost incessant colonial wars.
